Nothing lasts forever
No one lives forever
Keep that in mind, and love
Our life is not the same old burden
Our path is not the same long journey
The flower fades and dies
We must pause to weave perfection into music
Keep that in mind, and love
My beloved, in you I find refuge
Love droops towards its sunset
To be drowned in the golden shadows
Love must be called from its play
And love must be born again to be free
Keep that in mind, and love
My beloved, in you I find refuge
Without seeing my love, I cannot sleep
Let us hurry to gather our flowers
Before they are plundered by the passing winds
It quickens our blood and brightens our eyes
To snatch kisses that would vanish
If we delayed
Our life is eager
Our desires are keen
For time rolls by
Keep that in mind, and love
My beloved, in you I find refuge
Beauty is sweet for a short time
And then it is gone
Knowledge is precious
But we will never have time to complete it
All is done and finished
In eternal heaven
But our life here is eternally fresh
Keep that in mind, and love

Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick
And think of you
Turning in circles confusion–
Is nothing new
Flashback to warm nights–
Almost left behind
A suitcase of memories
Time after–
Sometimes you picture me–
I’m walking too far ahead
You’re calling to me I can’t hear
What you have said–
And you say–go slow–
I’ve fallen behind–
The second hand unwinds
If you’re lost you can look–and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you–I’ll be waiting
Time after time
After your picture fades and darkness has
Turned to gray
Watching through windows–I’m wondering
If you’re okay
And you say–go slow–
I’ve fallen behind
The drum beats out of time–
If you’re lost you can look–and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you–I’ll be waiting
Time after time
Lyrics : Cyndi Lauper/Robert Andrew Hyman
Title song from the 2000 album of Eva. Released 4 years after she passed away. Most of her recordings available are either Live or demo/practice tapes she did which highlight her genius.
I Wandered By A Brookside
I wandered by a brookside
I wandered by a mill
I could not hear the water
The murmuring it was still
Not a sound of any grasshopper
Nor the chirp of any bird
But the beating of my own heart
Was the only sound I heard
The beating of my own heart
Was the only sound I heard
Then silent tears fast flowing
When someone stood beside
A hand upon my shoulder
I knew the touch was kind
He drew me near and nearer
We neither spoke one word
But the beating of our own two hearts
Was the only sound I heard
The beating of our own two hearts
Was the only sound I heard
Lyrics : Richard Monckton Milnes/Barbara Berry
A true gem of a song adapted from an old poem by Richard Milnes. This one has the signature style of Eva’s soothing vocals sung to a minimum piano/guitar arrangement.
Anniversary Song
Today has been a special day
An anniversary a request
That you play your piano
As the evening sun slowly sets
I never thought I’d get this old dear
Never had a reason to live so long
And the Lord’s been like my shadow
Even when I was wrong
No I never thought it would turn out this way
A birthday with apologies (oh oh oh)
For all the tears and regrets (oh oh oh)
And I’ve always saved your poetry (oh oh oh)
For these years when you forget (oh oh oh)
I never thought I’d get this old dear
Never had a reason to live so long
And the Lord’s been like my shadow
Even when I was wrong
No I never thought it would turn out this way
So sing with me softly (oh oh oh)
As the day turns to night (oh oh oh)
And later I’ll dream (oh oh oh)
Of paradise with you (oh oh oh)
I love you and good night
Lyrics : Steven M. Digman
Last year, ‘Somewhere’ was the 11th Eva Cassidy album released. In her lifetime, only 2 albums -’The Other Side’ (with Chuck Brown) & ‘Live at the Blue’s Alley’ were released. ‘Somewhere’ consists of forgotten practice tapes found in the basement of her band’s guitarist. Will post some songs from this album someday.
Koi to hai jo, nizaam-e-hasti
chala raha hai, wohi khuda hai
There is someone
who is running the whole system of existence
and that is the only God
Dikhayi bhi jo na de nazar bhi
Jo aa raha hai, wohi khuda hai
wohi khuda hai, wohi khudaa hai
wohi khuda hai..
He is not visible,
but yet he is apparent (In the surrounding),
and that is the only God
Nazar bhi rakhe, samaatein bhi
Woh jaan leta hai, neeatein bhi
Jo khana-e-lashaoor mein jagmaga raha hai
wohi khuda hai, wohi khudaa hai
wohi khudaa hai, wohi khudaa hai
He finds out intentions too,
the one who is sparkling in the unrealized part of the human nature,
and That is the only God
Talash uss ko, na kar buttoun mein
woh hai badalti hui ruttoun mein
Jo din ko raat aur raat ko din
bana raha hai, wohi khuda hai
wohi khuda hai, wohi khudaa hai
wohi khudaa hai…
Don’t try to find him in Idols, he is in changing nights.
He is turning the Night into the Day and the Day into the Night,
and That is the only God
Dikha’yee di’ye yooN ke bekhud kiyaa
HameN aap se bhee judaa kar chale
Saw you in such a way that made me forget myself
You separated me from even myself
JabeeN sajda karte hee karte gayi
Haq-e-bandagee ham adaa kar chale My head kept bowing in prayers for you
I fulfilled my duty of being truthfully devoted
Parishtish kee yaaN tak k ai but tujhe
Nazar meN sabhoN kee Khudaa kar chale
I worshiped you to the extent
I made you God in everyone’s eyes
Bahut aarzoo thee galee kee tiree
So yaaN se lahoo meN nahaa kar chale I desired a lot for the way to your home
So I leave from here bathed in blood
Movie Name: Bazaar (1982)
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Music Director: Khaiyam
Lyrics: Mir Taqi Mir
One of the more difficult Ghazals to exactly pin point the correct meaning because of the use of Metaphors. The words though simple convey different feelings depending on the context. That’s one of the beauties of Urdu Ghazal, it can express various thoughts subject to who is reading it. A classic by Khaiyam and Lata.
‘Mir’ is the classic Urdu Poet who before Ghalib actually developed the language.
