Zehaal-e-miskeen makun taghaful,

Duraye naina banaye batiyan.

Do not overlook my misery,
by blandishing your eyes and weaving tales,

Ke taab-e-hijran nadaram ay jaan,
Na leho kahe lagaye chatiyan.

My patience has over-brimmed, O sweetheart!
why do you not take me to your bosom.

Shaban-e-hijran daraz chun zulf,
Wa roz-e-waslat cho umer kotah.

Long like curls in the night of separation
short like life on the day of our union.

Sakhi piya ko jo main na dekhun,
To kaise kaTun andheri ratiyan.

My dear, how will I pass the dark dungeon night
without your face before.

Yakayak az dil do chashm-e-jadu,
Basad farebam baburd taskin.

Suddenly, using a thousand tricks
the enchanting eyes robbed me of my tranquil mind.

Kisay pari hai jo ja sunave,
Piyare pi ko hamari batiyan,

Who would care to go and report
this matter to my darling.

Cho shama sozan cho zaraa hairan,
Hamesha giryan be ishq an meh.

Tossed and bewildered, like a flickering candle,
I roam about in the fire of love.

Na nind naina na ang chaina,
Na aap aaven na bhejen patiyan,

Sleepless eyes, restless body,
neither comes she, nor any message.

Bahaq-e-roz-e-visaal-e-dilbar,
Ke daad mara gharib Khusro.

In honour of the day I meet my beloved
who has lured me so long, O Khusro!

Sapet man ke varaye rakhun,
Jo jaye pauN piya ke khatiyan.

I shall keep my heart suppressed
if ever I get a chance to get to her trick.

Dikha’yee di’ye yooN ke bekhud kiyaa
HameN aap se bhee judaa kar chale

Saw you in such a way that made me forget myself
You separated me from even myself

JabeeN sajda karte hee karte gayi
Haq-e-bandagee ham adaa kar chale

My head kept bowing in prayers for you
I fulfilled my duty of being truthfully devoted

Parishtish kee yaaN tak k ai but tujhe
Nazar meN sabhoN kee Khudaa kar chale

I worshiped you to the extent
I made you God in everyone’s eyes

Bahut aarzoo thee galee kee tiree
So yaaN se lahoo meN nahaa kar chale

I desired a lot for the way to your home
So I leave from here bathed in blood

bazaar

Movie Name: Bazaar (1982)
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Music Director: Khaiyam
Lyrics: Mir Taqi Mir

One of the more difficult Ghazals to exactly pin point the correct meaning because of the use of Metaphors. The words though simple convey different feelings depending on the context. That’s one of the beauties of Urdu Ghazal, it can express various thoughts subject to who is reading it. A classic by Khaiyam and Lata.

‘Mir’ is the classic Urdu Poet who before Ghalib actually developed the language.

Har Gham

Har gham jo mila, kuch sabak kuch pehchan ban gaya

Har gham se main kuch aur behtar insaan ban gaya

Every sorrow i faced, some became a lesson, some identity

Every sorrow i faced, made me a little better personality

Jab Bhi Milti Hai Mujhe Ajnabi Lagti Kyon Hai
Whenever It Meets Me, Why Does It Seem Like A Stranger?

Zindagi Roz Naye Rang Badalti Kyon Hai

Why Does Life Assume New Colors Every Day?

Tum Se Bichhade Hain To Ab Kis Se Milati Hai Hamein

I’ve Separated From You; To Whom Now Shall Life Introduce Me Now?

Zindagi Dekhiye Kya Rang Dikhati Hai Hamein
Behold Life: What Color Does It Show To Me Now?

Justajoo Jis Kee Thee Us Ko To Naa Paayaa Hum Ne
I Did Not Find What I Had Been Searching For

Is Bahaane Se Magar Dekh Lee Duniyaan Hum Ne
But On This Pretext, I Beheld The World
