I recently rediscovered the timeless songs of Hemant Kumar while watching  Neo Noir Bollywood classics like Kohraa, Bees Saal Baad, Solva Saal, Baat Ek Raat Ki.

Starting this Post with a new remix of the eternal midnight song – Ye Nayan Dare Dare from the film – Kohraa (1964).

[audio https://ia600901.us.archive.org/4/items/YeNayanDareMidnightMix/Ye%20Nayan%20Dare%20-%20Midnight%20Mix.mp3]

This is rendered by Bhavya Pandit with Remix by StudioUnplugged.

And here is the original :-

Another of my all time favourites is “Tum Pukar Lo” from the movie Khamoshi.

Incidentally all of these movies feature Waheeda Rehman.

[audio https://ia600901.us.archive.org/16/items/TumPukarLoTumharaIntezaarHaiKhamoshi/Tum%20Pukar%20Lo%20Tumhara%20Intezaar%20Hai%20-%20Khamoshi.mp3]

“Na tum humein jaano” from Baat Ek Raat Ki

And lastly the two versions from Solva Saal (1958) of “Hai Apna Dil To Awara”

Hai Apna Dil To Awara – sad

Hai Apna Dil To Awara – happy

bheegi sili si yeh raat hai
halka halka sa hai nasha
saath mein ladki ek haseen
baithe baithe hai aa phansi
kismat se mila hai mauka
pachhataayega tu jo socha
kal ki hai kisne jaani
aage na jaane hoga kya
hoga kya? jaane kal, jaanu na
hoga kya? jaane phir, jaanu na

behki behki si yeh hey chaal hai
uchhla machhla sa dil mera
jaane nikla suraj aaj kis taraf
sab lagta hai badla badla
kismat se mila hai mauka
pachhataayega tu jo socha
kal ki hai kisne jaani
aage na jaane hoga kya
hoga kya? jaane kal, jaanu na
hoga kya? jaane phir, jaanu na

jaane kaise baithe baithe
sapano mein hota hai bilkul vaise
tere aanchal ka saaya
chehre pe apane jo paaya
kwaabon ka jaadu saara
jaise dekha tuta taara
hoga kya? - 2 jaane kal - 2 jaanu na - 2
hoga kya? - 2 jaane phir- 2 jaanu na - 2
hoga kya? jaane kal, socha na, jaane phir, jaanu na
kal ki kal, sochenge, abhi?? jaanu na
kal ki kal, sochenge

Kitne bhi tu kar le sitam
Has haske sahenge hum
Yeh pyaar na hoga kam
Sanam teri kasam

Ho, sanam teri kasam
Sanam teri kasam

Maana ke khata meri hai
Par itni saza na de tu
Le paiyaan padoon tere sajana
Ab to gale laga le tu

Tere dam se hai mera dam
Sanam teri kasam

Aise hi ruoth ke mujhse
Ab aur kahan jayega
Aahoon mein asar hoga toh
Tu laut ke phir aayega

Arey tu hai to kya hai gham
Sanam teri kasam

Lyrics : Gulsham Bawra

Singer : Asha Bhonsle

Music : R D Burman

1983_sanam

One of  the cutest song from 80’s. The movie followed typical “Nasir Hussain” plot. Made by Reena’s sis – Barkha Roy.

Tum ek be-ghairat insaan ho

Jise baatein banane ke siva kuch nahin aata

Kumar, na tumhara koi character hai

Na imaan, na wafadaari

Hum bewafa hargiz na the
Par hum wafa kar naa sake
Haazir hai lo ye dil jo hum
Pehle fida kar na sake

Kitni akeli thi woh rahen hum jinpe
Ab tak akele chalte rahen
Tujhse bichhad ke bhi o bekhabar
Tere hi gham mein jalte rahen

Tune kiya jo shikwa
Hum woh gila kar naa sake

Hum bewafa hargiz na the
Par hum wafa kar naa sake
Humko mili uski sazaa
Hum jo khata kar naa sake

Tumne jo dekha suna sach tha magar
Kitna tha sach yeh kisko pataa
Jaane tumhe maine koi dhokha diya
Jaane tumhe koi dhokha hua

Is pyaar mein sach jhooth kaa
Tum faisla kar naa sake

Hum bewafa hargiz na the
Par hum wafa kar naa sake
Humko mili uski sazaa
Hum jo khata kar naa sake

Hum bewafa hargiz na the
Par hum wafa kar naa sake
Haazir hai lo ye dil jo hum
Pehle fida kar na sake

Kya baat hai tumhari Kumar !

MmmmuuwwaaahhhHHHHH !!

This is one of my fav caper movies (Bollywood hardly makes any) and i was itching to recut this song for such a long time. The “Jhingalala Hurr” may have been a requirement for the movie but it mars the song terribly in my humble opinion. This is my first mix so please be kind in your criticism.

Kar Gayi Mast Mujhe

Kar gayi mast mujhe falgun ki hawa

Main laga jhoomne, mujhe kya hoone laga

dillagi-1978

Lyrics : Yogesh

Singer : Kishore , Suman & Others

Beautiful lines sung to a dreamy tune by the great Kishore Da. I wish someone would reinterpret & add some new lyrics to this opening line. Maybe i will have a go at it someday to complete it.

Main Kaun Sa Geet Sunaoon

Main kaun sa geet sunaoon, kya gaoon,

jo piyaa bas jaaye, tere tan man mein

khil jaaye khoyee kaliyaan, haaye kaliyaan

aur bahaarein aaye sooni bhagiyan mein

Yeh kaise achaanak binaa koyee aahat

chaley aaye ho tum mere zindagi mein

tume aaj paakar mai sub kuch bhulaakar

magan ho ke dhoobhi huyee hoon khushi mein

Kithne hi rang salone haaye,salone

bhar gaye hai mere khaali sawan mein

main kaun sa geet …

kabhee tum sahara banoge hamara

Main ye baath kal tak nahiin maanti thi

magar aaj kaise yeh lagta hai jaise

main har ek janam mein tumhe jaanti thi

lagta hai saari duniyaa, saari duniyaa,

chal gaye hai saj ke, jaise tan tan mein

main kaun sa geet …

dillagi_meeting

Lyrics : Yogesh

Singer : Lata Mangeshkar

Soulful lyrics , dusky skies and a riverside make this song surreal.

dillagi_dharmendra

The movie itself is one of the finest comedies of Basu Chatterjee. Superbly acted by Dharamendra and Hema. Sample the fight scene in the end : Dharam is fighting the goons using his broken glasses and a shoe. Hilarious !

Mirza Ghalib is the Amitabh Bachchan of Urdu Poetry. You haven’t read Urdu Sukhan if you haven’t read Ghalib. The essence of his poetry to me is his philosophy and how he extends the Ghazal from being a Love Poem to encompassing a vast array of ideas and sentiments.

passions - Jagjit Chitra Mirza Ghalib gulzar

Every Ghazal singer worth his salt has tried to sing Ghalib, but no one matches the purity & simplicity of Jagjit’s compositions. These Ghazals are from Gulzar’s TV Series called “Mirza Ghalib”. Nasseruddin Shah did a splendid act as the ill-fated poet. Ghalib is not easy to perform, but here is Jagjit’s Masterpiece for your pleasure.

Beautifully sung by Chitra. One of Ghalib’s popular Ghazal’s , but none of the other singers can match Jagjit’s composition.

Gulzar's M Ghalib Nasser

har ek baat pe kahate ho tum ki tuu kyaa hai

jagjit6

“jalaa hia jism jahaa.N dil bhii jal gayaa hogaa
kuredate ho jo ab raakh justajuu kyaa hai ” – Hmm fingering a broken hearted poet is bound to raise a reaction.

“rago.n me.n dau.Date phirane ke ham nahii.n qaayal
jab aa.Nkh hii se na Tapakaa to phir lahuu kyaa ha” – Wow , the intensity of pain.

So here ends my post on Ghalib by Jagjit  & Chitra. Looking to post some other artists but some other time.

Raat Youn Dil Mein Teri

raat yuuN dil meN terii khoyii hu’ii yaad aayii
jaise viiraane meN chupke se bahaar aa jaaye
jaise sehraaoN meN hauley se chale baad-e-nasiim

As in the wilderness spring comes quietly
As, slowly, in the desert, moves the breeze
As, to a sick man, without cause, comes peace

Even if one doesn’t know Urdu, here is an example why it can still be a joy to listen.

Hansi Khanakti Hui

Hansi Khanakti Hui, Ya bujhi bujhi khushiyan
Hain dosti ki mehek se , Rachi hui ghadhiyan

Maza anokha sa hai, Aate jaate lamhon mein
Kitabein god mein phaili, Phir khoye baaton mein

Rafaqaton mein khazana, Jo humne paya hai
Na dil pe bojh hai koi, Na gham ka saya hai

Hume ye dhun hai ke khushbu ,Ko hum toh dekheinge
Yaqeen hai ke sitaroon, Ko badh ke chooleinge

Khula ye raaz bicharna, Bhi tha baharoon ko
Kisi ke hath nahin, Choo sake sitaroon ko

Kabhi dareecho mein shammay, Jo hum jalate hain
Toh geet lehje khayaloon, Mein gungunate hain
